Price Estimates For Common Styles
- This price list serves as a guide to help you estimate the cost of restoring your chair only.
- Chairs needing woven backs are priced as 2 seats.
- Many chairs need a little fixing up before weaving, a small repair fee up to $10 may be added.
- Materials are billed separately and due at the time of service.
- Final cost will be agreed to when I see the chair in person, prior to any work done.
Hand Caning
- Hand caned chairs are priced by the hole and by the size of the cane used.
- $1.00 per hole for medium to fine fine cane (16 to 27 holes per foot).
- $1.25 per hole for super fine and carriage cane (28 to 32 holes per foot).
- The cost of cane for one chair averages $10 to $15.

Pressed Pre-Woven Cane (Machine Cane)
- $4.00 per inch measuring the widest side. (usually the front)
- Materials are billed separately and due prior to any work done.
- The cost of cane for one chair averages $5 to $8.

Fibre Rush
Fibre rush, a twisted paper product invented in the late 1800s quickly replaced real rush (cattail reeds) because of its ease and durability. (Not good around cats!).
- $5.00 per inch measured from outside the front leg to outside the front leg. Unless the chair is deeper than it is wide.
- The cost of rush for one chair averages $5 to $9.

Binders Cane Weave
Binders cane is used on porch rockers, rockers, and on more rustic chairs. It is a cane product approximately 1/4" in width with a hard curved surface. There are two patterns most often used, the basket weave and herring bone pattern.
- A simple basket weave on a porch rocker would cost about $6.00 per inch measured from outside the front leg to outside the front leg.
- Herring bone weave costs about $2.50 more per inch. It is harder to weave but is a tighter and prettier pattern.
There are other more involved patterns. These patterns normally cost more to weave. Binders cane comes in different widths and it costs more to weave a narrower binders cane than a wider binders cane.
Splint Work
Splint is a flat cane product that comes in different widths up to about an inch wide. It is woven in the same type patterns as binder’s cane, that is either a herring bone or basket weave. It is used on more outdoor or rustic furniture.
- Both these patterns would cost about $4.00 to $6.00 per inch to weave.
Shaker Tape
Shaker tape is a cotton fabric that comes in a multitude of colors and widths up to 1" wide. Traditionally wrapped on original Shaker chairs in either a basket weave or twill pattern. Normally two color combinations would be used.
- An average size chair will use about 35 to 40 yards of materials one way and 35 to 40 yards of material the other way costing about $75 to $100 per chair just for materials.
- Depending on the weave, labor costs are about $40.00 per chair.
Shaker tape is a long lasting product but it will fade with time.
